Visa Requirements for New Zealand Travellers
New Zealand travellers need a visa to enter Sri Lanka. The easiest and most efficient option is to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eVisa) online via www.eta.gov.lk. We recommend completing this process at least a week before departure. While there is a visa-on-arrival option, delays are likely, and many airlines now ask for visa confirmation before boarding. The tourist visa is valid for 30 days, and your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. You’ll also need a return ticket and sufficient funds for your stay. Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on where you’re going. The west and south coasts, along with the hill country, are at their best from December to March, while the east coast is ideal from May to September. Thanks to its two distinct monsoon seasons, there's always sunshine somewhere on the island. Whether you're chasing surf, sun, or cooler mountain air, there’s never a wrong time to experience the warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality.
Currency, Credit Cards & ATMs The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR), with notes available in denominations from 10 to 2000. It's wise to carry smaller notes for everyday transactions such as meals, tips, or tuk tuk rides. While major hotels and tourist shops quote prices in US dollars or Euros, all payments are collected in rupees at the local exchange rate. Currency can be exchanged at banks, hotels, or authorised money changers—avoid unauthorised exchanges, as they are illegal. Credit cards are widely accepted in urban centres and ATMs are generally easy to find. For peace of mind, always carry some cash, especially when travelling to rural areas.
Dress & Respect Sri Lanka is a deeply spiritual country, and respecting local customs goes a long way. When visiting temples or religious sites, cover shoulders and knees—carry a scarf or shawl for convenience. Shoes must be removed before entering these sacred spaces.
