Why Taiwan Stole My Heart
By Kristy Cockerill – KC Travel
First Impressions
I’ve just returned from an unforgettable 8-day adventure through Taiwan, thanks to Air New Zealand and Taiwan Tourism – and wow, what a destination! I’ll admit, it wasn’t high on my radar before, but now I’m wondering why I didn’t visit sooner. From the moment I arrived, the warmth of the people and the energy of the streets made me feel welcome. If it’s not already on your travel list, it absolutely should be.
An Island of Contrasts
Taiwan is an island of fascinating contrasts – from the soaring skyline of Taipei, where Taipei 101 offers jaw-dropping views, to the serenity of Sun Moon Lake and the rugged beauty of the Alishan Mountains. In Taichung, creativity bursts from every corner, while the countryside offers lush forests, tea plantations, and peaceful temples. I had imagined a concrete jungle, but instead discovered that nearly two-thirds of the island is covered in mountains, making it one of the greenest, most scenic places I’ve visited.
Culture and History Everywhere
Taiwan’s past under Japanese rule is visible in its architecture, cherry blossom-lined streets, and the efficient high-speed rail – which can take you from Taipei to the southern beaches in just 90 minutes. I loved exploring ornate temples, each filled with the scent of incense, golden carvings, and quiet moments of reflection. Highlights included Wen Wu Temple overlooking Sun Moon Lake, and wandering through the storybook colours of Rainbow Village, a small but inspiring community art project.
A Food Lover’s Dream
And the food? Let’s just say I could eat my way around Taiwan a dozen times and never get bored. From street snacks at night markets to Michelin-recommended bites, every meal was a discovery. Favourites included dumplings, bubble tea (I even took a class and earned a certificate!), pineapple cakes, and the surprisingly delicious peanut coriander ice cream roll.
Unforgettable Highlights
One of the most memorable days was riding the Formosensis train through the Alishan Forest – a beautifully restored historic railway, with carriages crafted from fragrant Taiwan red cypress and hinoki wood. Between the breathtaking scenery, a peaceful tea experience, and the nostalgic rhythm of the train, it felt like stepping back in time.
This trip was more than just a holiday – it was a wonderful reminder of how travel can surprise, delight, and open your eyes to places you may never have considered. Taiwan truly offers something for every kind of traveller.
