The town clings to a small peninsula at the head of a deep bay on the craggy Snæfellsnes Peninsula, north of Reykjavik. The landscape here is dominated by the pyramid-shaped Kirkjufell, or Church Mountain, said to be Iceland’s most photographed mountain. The appearance of the mountain changes constantly, whether it’s draped in cloud, mirrored in glass-calm water on a clear day, or glowing as it reflects the setting sun.
In nearby Kirkjufell you can visit Kirkjufellsfoss, a series of low but beautiful waterfalls tumbling over a rock shelf, as well as the much higher Grundarfoss, which plunges 230 feet over a wall of basalt. In town, the Saga Center displays photographs of life in Grundarfjordur in days gone by.
